Things to do in Lake Orion, MI
Starting out as simply a sawmill in 1825, Lake Orion was originally Decker’s Settlement due to Jesse Decker and his family which came down from New York. Very soon the small community grew and inhabited a post office, tavern store, school and blacksmith shop. Soon Jesse Decker was so well known around the area he was elected as justice of the peace in 1837. The township of Orion was approved by the Michigan Territory in 1835, the same year it applied for statehood. Orion, already well established, was platted and chartered in 1859. In 1862, a fire ravaged Orion, destroyed everything. Despite this, the town was rebuilt. The railroad that was built in Orion paved the way to mass development in 1872.
The great resort era soon followed after another incredible recovery from a fire in 1874. Orion became well known when lumberjacks bringing lumber to Detroit would bunk there, and when Lapeer Road, a highway running through Orion, was paved in 1929, permanent residents moved in.
Lake Orion is served by the Lake Orion Community Schools school district. The high school is home to a vast array of award winning athletic and academic teams. Ranging from high school state champions in wrestling, baseball, girls golf, powerlifting, robotics, forensics and the school band. The school hosts dozens of teams and clubs that accomplish many things and often help around the town. The marching band is amoung the top 10 best marching bands in the state of Michigan. The village, along with the township, offer a wide variety of activities and athletics for children as well as adults.
Lake Orion itself is thwarted in folk lore when sometime in the 1800’s a group of local kids playing a prank on the town launched a flaming fake dragon out into the lake. Because several people saw this with no explanation, there has been rumors of the dragon of Lake Orion. The story has since grown in length and extravagance now stating the monster was over 80 feet in length and still haunts the waters almost 200 years later.
Notable past and current residents include William Broomfield, Pat Caputo, Jimmy Hoffa, Mickey Lolich, Cynthia Watros and Mickey York.
